Rising Alcoholism Among Commercial Drivers Worries FRSC

The Awka Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has expressed worry over rising cases of alcoholism among commercial bus drivers.
Deputy Sector Commander and Head of Operations, Mr Adewunmi Malomo has said in Awka that the trend had become worrisome to the corps.
Malomo, who led a team of the corps personnel on safety campaign to the Living Faith Church (LFC), Amawbia, said the drivers usually claimed they “only took roots”.
He, however, pointed out that the roots were usually soaked in local gin which they claimed had cure for so many ailments.
“Drinking roots before driving is alcoholism, because it is usually soaked in the local gin (ogogoro) to bring out its contents before drinking,” he said.
He said that the FRSC decided to visit churches for its campaign against the illicit act, in order to save lives.
“We are tired of packing dead bodies on the highways, more so, the scripture is against untimely deaths.”
He urged the worshippers to caution such bus drivers against the habit because of the danger it poses to lives and property, adding that “dying on the roads is not Gods design for us.”Malomo also cautioned against night journeys, saying it was “highly unsafe and difficult to obtain help in case of accident.”
The Resident Pastor, Godwin Obinna, used the forum to pray for safety on the road, at home and in businesses, and urged the public not to see the road marshals as enemies.
