The Chairman of Port
Harcourt City Local Government Council, Hon. Chimbiko Akaralo, has commissioned the new Mile I Market temporary site located at Silverbird Galleria, along Abonema Wharf Road, Mile I Diobu.
Speaking during the commissioning of the market over the weekend, the Secretary of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Mr Theophilus Akugbo who represented the council chairman, said the council would always liaise with the state government to ensure the welfare of the traders.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to rebuilding the second phase of the mile I market that was razed by fire last December, which necessitated the relocation of the market to its temporary site.
According to him, the aim was to ensure that those traders who were affected by last year’s inferno were given the opportunity to continue with their businesses as well as take good care of their respective families and dependants.
The PHALGA boss commended traders for relocating to the temporary site and called on the residents of the state to continue to patronize them without qualms.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of Mile I Market Traders Association (MOMTA), Deacon Kenneth Eze, stated that the purpose of relocating part of the market was to forestall the frequent fire outbreak, adding that original shop owners would be given priority on completion of the project.
He used the opportunity to appeal to the state Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the PHALGA leadership to make good by ensuring that the project was completed on record time.
He urged members of the public to continue to partronise the traders at the various sites saying there would be discounts on all products sold at the temporary site within 100 days.
