The Owerri Chamber
of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture said that epileptic power supply had almost crippled business activities in Owerri.
The President of the chamber, Mr Kevin Mbawuike, told newsmen in Owerri that the cost of running power plants had reduced production capacities.
Mbawuike noted that the poor power situation was a huge threat to the growth of business in the country.
“In Owerri, for instance, consumers get an average of five to six hours supply of power per day. This is usually associated with too much interruption.
“For an industrial activity, you cannot depend on such interruptions to run your firm,’’ he said.
He decried the delay in the supply of prepaid meters to consumers, adding that it was unfair for the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to place consumers on estimated billings.
He said that the economy would develop at a tremendous rate if urgent steps were taken to ensure stable power supply.
