The Director-General of
the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Dr Ngeri Benebo, has charged staff of the agency to be dedicated to their duties.
Benebo gave the charge at a two-day In-house technical workshop for the agency’s enforcement officers in Kano.
Represented by Mr Alabo Wokoma, a director in the agency, Benebo said that there would be necessary changes in the environmental health and protection perceptions of Nigerians. The director-general explained that the workshop was organised to update the officers on global best practices in new environmental challenges confronting the country and the world at large.
“It is aimed at imparting knowledge of environmental protection and practical enforcement; standardised procedure for enforcement and applying laws, regulations and guidelines to discourage violation,” she said.
In his address, the Kano State Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, advocated the amendment of environmental laws, to make citizens more environment friendly.
“Citizens enforcement play a valuable role in promoting environmental compliance, just as information disclosure has proven to be a potent force in motivating firms to improve environment performance,” Abbas said. The commissioner, who was represented by a director in the ministry, Alhaji Mustapha Muhammad, said that effective enforcement is important in realising environmental goals.
