Nasarawa Plans Big For Sports Dev
The Nasarawa State Di
rector of Sports, Mathias Mamman, last Thursday said that the state’s Sports Council had concluded plans to restore the state’s lost glory in sports.
Mamman told Tidesports in Lagos that the state would strive to improve in areas they did not perform well in 2013.
He said that the plan was aimed at boosting the morale of athletes in the buildup to the National Sports Festival.
The director noted that in spite of the financial problems facing the council, the state would strive to make a better impact in sports this year.
He said that the state’s absence from the maiden edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) in 2013 was a regrettable decision.
“Participation in the NYG would have earned the state a lot of medals and respect among the other states in the country.’’
He, however, noted that adequate plans had been made for qualified youths to participate in the 2014 National Sports Festival.
“Our plan is to prepare well and win the medals we ought to have won last year.’’
Mamman said that the state’s basketball, handball, judo, gymnastics, track and field and volleyball teams had started training seriously for the Sport Festival, slated for Calabar.
He also commended youths in the state for their understanding and active participation in sporting activities.
