Governor, Mrs Josephine Elechi, recently inaugurated two bungalows constructed by the Abakaliki Local Government Council for an indigent widow and a blind man.
Inaugurating the two-bedroom bungalows, Elechi called on well-meaning individuals, agencies and government organs to pay more attention to the plight of the less privileged in the society.
According to her, such attention will alleviate their sufferings and give them a sense of belonging to contribute meaningfully to the society.
“In pursuit of this objective, I, through my pet project – The Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI) – embarked upon numerous programmes aimed at reducing poverty among the less privileged in the society.
“The most recent is the distribution of mobile phones and SIM cards to orphans and vulnerable children and other economically disadvantaged persons.
“This is under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Conditional Grants Scheme (CGS) empowerment programme to enable them to access funds to enhance their living conditions,” she said.
The governor’s wife commended the council’s leadership for also providing the necessary infrastructural amenities for various communities in the area.
“I am glad that the rural electrification projects, boreholes and rural roads, among others, are being undertaken by the council.
“These would in no small measure improve rural transportation and encourage economic development among the rural dwellers.
“I also call on our people to ensure the safeguarding of the amenities against vandalism to prevent huge financial and material losses to the communities,’ she said.
The Chairman of the council, Mr Bartholomew Ottah, thanked the governor’s wife for inaugurating the houses and pledged his administration’s commitment to embarking on other projects that would enhance the wellbeing of the people.
“We will offer continued assistance in the educational, welfare and training needs of the less privileged to provide them with the needed succour in facing life’s challenges,” he said.
Mr Nweze Obasi, the blind man, thanked the chairman for the gesture and pleaded for assistance in acquiring a meaningful source of livelihood.
