Imo NUJ Tasks Journalists On ICT
The Nigeria Union of Jour
nalists (NUJ) in Imo has urged its members to be ICT compliant to meet the challenges of 21st Century news reporting.
The NUJ Vice President in Zone C, Mr Chris Isiguzo, gave the advice in Owerri at the presentation of two new computers and a printer by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).
He said that the country and the world in general were going paperless and journalists could not afford to be left behind.
Isiguzo said the presentation was in line with the electioneering promises of the current executives of NUJ to make journalists in the country computer literate.
He expressed concern that many journalists were poor in ICT and urged them to make use of the computers to improve themselves.
He said that similar donations had been made to other South East states like Abia and Enugu, while same would be presented to journalists in Awka and Ebonyi States.
“Paper economy is gradually going out; Presentations are sent online during workshops and most journalists do not know how to use the computers.”
Isiguzo said that plans were underway to train journalists both locally and abroad on ICT.
He also urged them to key into the insurance scheme of the union to be full-fledged members and encourage NUJ leadership by paying their check-off dues and practicing fees regularly.
Isiguzo said that the South East zone had the least number of members who had not keyed into the insurance programme.
The state Chairman, Mr Innocent Igwe, commended the vice president for his efforts at ensuring that journalists in the zone were equipped technologically.
He said the donation would uplift NUJ members in the state and enhance members’ knowledge on the use of computer.
“This donation will make members of the union to be better equipped and meet with the digital challenges of the decade,” he said.
Igwe said the equipment will be put to proper use and assure that members would embrace the insurance scheme.
