FRSC Vows To Clamp Down On Road Traffic Offenders
The Federal Road Safety
Corps (FRSC) has warned that it would clamp-down on drivers using phones and seat belts violators on the roads.
Its Zonal Commander in-charge of Edo, Delta and Anambra, Mr Charles Akpabio, told newsmen in Onitsha that the move would reduce road accidents.
He said there would be public enlightenment on the issues while mobile classrooms would be stationed on major routes in the zone.
He explained that most accidents were caused by drivers losing concentration while on high speed, explaining that most drivers lost concentration while using phones or other gadgets.
“Driving demands 100 per cent concentration, especially while on the highway. Instead, it is gradually becoming a trend for drivers to be on phone or other distracting gadgets while driving.
“This, within some seconds, could lead to a fatal road accident and mostly you realise that the driver and his front seat passenger are not putting on their seat belts.
“The end result is always regrettable because the two of them may be thrown out of the vehicle and on the high speed, you can imagine what happens.
“But, if the seat belts are on the people in the front may sustain injuries. The seat belt will withhold the force of the crash that may want to throw them out of the moving vehicle,’’ he said.
The zonal commander said that regular and special marshals would be on the road to ensure total compliance with the traffic rules and regulations.
“FRSC is poised to reduce all forms of deaths on our roads and as well correct negative attitudes of our road users while driving.
“And one sure way of doing this is that drivers must drive with 100 per cent concentration and be sober,’’ he added.
