‘Crude Implements, Bane of Agric Production’
The use of crude
implements by farmers, especially at the rural level has been known to lower productivity due to the amount of labour needed to increase production.
According to Mr. Okezie Nwanimi a farmer from Ihuike in the Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, the so called crude implements are indispensable to the rural farmer.
In a chat with our correspondent recently in his country home, Mr. Nwanimi said what should be done was an improvement on the implements.
He said the handle of hoes could be improved on by using longer handles so that the user does not need to bend double.
The blades also, according to him should differ in size depending on the use it would be put to.
He said the idea came to him as he has been a farmer all his life.
He further explained that the type of hoe he uses to make mounds was not the type he uses when weeding his farms.
He said smaller blades were needed to weed so that much damage is not caused to the crops especially cassava.
In order to increase production, he advised that group arrangement should be organised, where many people cultivate for one person at a time in turns.
