Council Clears Drains In Onitsha
Onitsha North Council
has started clearing the drains along major roads in the city to allow for free flow of wastes and prevent flooding.
Chairman of the council, Mr Douglas Egbuna, disclosed this on Monday in Onitsha in an interview.
The chairman, said that the exercise was capital intensive due to the machinery and number of workers deployed adding that the workers had earlier cleared the drains along the Old Market and New Market Roads.
He said that attention was now on evacuation of drains along Oguta Road, Awka Road, Ugwunabamkpa Road and Saint Stephen Road as well as the adjoining streets.
“The challenge so far has been enormous since we discovered that most of the roads have not been desilted for some years now. “We have to lift up heavy gutter slabs and scoop large volumes of sand out of the drains. “We intend to hasten the tempo of the job since the raining season is here. “We have already mobilised all staff of the council to join the political officer holders in this onerous exercise,’’ Egbuna said.
The chairman said that the exercise would help to minimise and control the spread of mosquitoes and other insects in the council area.
He urged the residents to assist his administration through proper disposal of refuse.
“Our people should stop reckless dumping of refuse.’’ “Receptacles are placed everywhere in the neighbourhoods; our people should use them and empty their refuse properly,’’ he said.
