Commissioner Warns Students Against Vices
The Commissioner for
Education in Imo State, Dr Uche Ejiogu, has urged students in the state to focus on their education and shun cultism and other vices.
Speaking with newsmen in Owerri last Tuesday, Ejiogu said any student caught in such activities or breaking school rules would be expelled and permanently excluded from the state’s free education programme.
She said four students were apprehended for cultism in Ikperejere Secondary School in Ihitte Ubona Local Government Area.
The commissioner said the alleged cultists were arrested following a call by an anonymous person who tipped her off on the activities of the cultists in the school.
“I give students my number and I encourage them to call me if they have complaints.
“So when someone called me and told me to proceed to Ikperejere Secondary School alleging the students had been initiated into cults, I immediately sent my director of supervision to investigate.
“Because the caller told me to remove their shirts, we did and we saw a tattoo of an axe on the arms of four girls,” Ejiogu said.
The commissioner further disclosed that three of the offenders ran away while one was handed over to the chief security officer of the governor who would follow up on the case.
Ejiogu added that the names of the defaulters would be published and blacklisted to ensure they did not get back into any of the state schools.
She added that investigations would continue even in other schools to ensure the trend was nipped in the bud.
The commissioner also urged principals and teachers to take their jobs seriously as the monitoring team would be visiting schools to investigate complaints to the commissioner.
