Amaechi Identifies Bane Of Nigeria’s Politics
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi says the influx of politicians with questionable character is responsible for the current crisis rocking the national polity.
He made the observation when he received the Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by former governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva at the weekend in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Amaechi opined that unfortunately it is the poor ones that have shown integrity and firmness in their political beliefs, while the rich are easily swayed by money and power.
He said, “It is a lesson that we must learn that there are very Nigerians with character among the elites…The poor majority have wonderful character and they fear God. But among the elites the only character that they have is shown in money and power’’.
The governor insisted that, “character is an essential element to good governance. I can’t see a man who has betrayed his friend and you say make him a governor or make him a deputy. What have you done? You have empowered him to betray more people, including the money you have left behind in the coffers”.
He congratulated all those who have stood with the former governor and urged them to remain steadfast in their belief and loyalty.
Amaechi further counselled them to avoid rancour and infighting, assuring that when the party wins elections justice and equity will prevail in the country.
The governor said APC in Rivers and Bayelsa are one just as the people are also one and advocated for freedom of association and expression as provided in the nation’s constitution.
Earlier, Chief Sylva intimated the governor that they were on solidarity visit, as the party is aware of the numerous persecutions Governor Amaechi was suffering from the federal government.
He however praised him for the transformation in the state capital and beyond noting that the APC provides the platform “to sweep away the corruption and ineptitude of the day’’.
