24 In Police Net Over Village,Herdsmen Clash
The Police in Taraba State have arrested 24 suspects in connection with a clash which occurred in Wukari on April 15.
The police spokesperson in the state,ASP Joseph Kwaji told newsmen in Jalingo yesterday that the suspects would be charged to court soon.
“The command has so far arrested 24 persons in connection with the current Wukari crisis, I can assure you that the suspects would soon be prosecuted,’’ he said.
It would be recalled that violence broke out in Wukari on April 15 when youths in the town protested the alleged killings in some villages by suspected herdsmen.
Earlier, The Nigeria Police in Taraba State had said the death toll from Wukari crisis had risen to 24.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Joseph Kwaji made the disclosure to newsmen at the weekend in Wukari.
Kwaji said 34 persons were injured while 99 houses were burnt during the crisis.
Meanwhile, the state’s Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar has said the 24 hour curfew on Wukari would continue till the security agents were satisfied with improvement in security situation.
Umar said this at the weekend in Wukari during a visit to the troubled area to ascertain the extent of damage following the crisis in the area.
“In my opinion, it is not yet time to relax the curfew imposed on Wukari because the youth are still very angry.
“Even this morning a house was burnt close a security check point in Wukari town,” he said.
Earlier, the paramount ruler of the town, the Aku Uka, Dr Shekarau Angyu, has appealed to the acting Governor to relax the curfew to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Crisis broke out in the town on Tuesday night following protests by youths in the area over alleged incessant killings in nearby villages by herdsmen.
