The Yobe State Gov
ernment has said that it had constructed a 12-km water drainage channel at the cost of N3 billion, to provide a permanent solution to flooding in Damaturu.
Alhaji Lawan Shettima, the state Commissioner for Works, said during an inspection visit to the site, that project was inherited by the Gaidam administration.
Shettima said that the project was “carefully and professionally” executed to ensure that flooding waters were emptied at the lowest elevation of the city, to avoid a backlash of the flood waters.
“The ministry was satisfied with the construction work and the early clearing of the channel, preparatory for hand-over long before the commencement of the rainy season.
“We are convinced that with the completion of this project, flooding in Damaturu will now be history.”
The commissioner urged contractors handling the N1 billion estate roads in the Gujba-Maiduguri Bypass Housing Estate to complete the project within the contractual time frame.
He expressed satisfaction with the quality and speed of work on the project, which is expected to be completed within the next next two weeks.
He urged all contractors executing road projects in the state to stick to quality and the agreed time of completion.
“This administration is committed to completing all road projects to promote socio-economic activities in the state,” Shettima said.
