Woman Leader Calls For Community Policing
A woman leader and
human rights activist, Mrs. Kelechi Akpelu, has called for community policing to stem the rising rate of crime across the country.
Mrs. Akpelu, who made the call while chatting with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend, said the need for community policing had become urgent because of high rate of robbery in Port Harcourt.
She was speaking against the backdrop of incessant robbery raids on homes at Rumuodomaya area of Port Harcourt.
The woman leader expressed regrets over the failure of the Federal Government to approve state police, and noted that the states should be allowed to complement the efforts of the Federal Government by providing security over lives and properties of law abiding citizens of the nation.
She stated the Nigeria Police Force, which the Federal Government ran was deficient, and pointed out that they had to grapple with logistic problems.
Mrs. Akpelu said community policing would help to nip crimes in the bud and allow law-abiding citizens to live in peace.
According to her, “homes in Rumuodomaya no longer sleep with their two eyes closed because of the invasion of robbers.
She noted the community policing would help stem the tide.
Mrs. Akpelu also said that it was wrong for the nation to keep saying that it was not ripe for state police because they believe that the governors would become demi-gods.
“Demi-gods or no, our nation should be allowed to move forward. Americans have state police yet it has not turned the American nation-state into shreds, ours cannot be different”, she stated.
She noted that state or community policing would help to alleviate the horrors of families at night.
Mrs. Akpelu flayed the police for poor response to distress calls, and urged all and sundry to support the call for community policing.
