Union Flays FG’s Closure Of Four Unity Schools
The national leadership
of the National Union of Textile and Garment Workers (NUGTW), has faulted the Federal Government’s directive to close four unity schools in the Northeast part of the country.
In a statement by the union obtained from the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Rivers State chapter secretariat in Port Harcourt, the union said the closure will invariably put the nation in bad light for people to believe that education is not needed in that part of the country.
The statement signed by its secretary General, Comrade Issa Aremu, said that while the union understood the reason for the action being on account of Boko Haram terror attacks and to prevent further killing of innocent school children the action of government was belated.
He said the government’s action was reactionary, and unhelpful to the advancement of educational development in that part of the country.
Aremu said the closure will definitely affect some of the students who had already registered for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) examinations, respectively.
The union pointed out that the country cannot be in the league of 20 leading economics in the world while hurriedly shutting down the unity schools.
It, therefore, querried the rationale behind government not proactively avoiding the killing of innocent school children in the first place by providing adequate security measures.
The union insisted that if government has the political will, it should be able to provide security to all Nigerians irrespective of where they reside.
