Holders Bayern Munich reached the Champions League quarter-finals after drawing 1-1 with visiting Arsenal, while Atletico Madrid advanced by thumping AC Milan 4-1 last night.
Bayern, who progressed 3-1 on aggregate, scored a 55th minute opener through Bastian Schweinsteiger. The hard-running midfielder comfortably converted a Franck Ribery cross from close range following a tricky run down the left from the Frenchman.
The Gunners hit back two minutes later through German striker Lukas Podolski, who blasted home from an acute angle after robbing his national skipper Philipp Lahm of possession around the edge of the area.
Arsene Wenger’s men pressed in search of a way back in the latter stages but could find no further reward at the Allianz Arena, with goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski saving a last-gasp penalty from Thomas Müller after Arjen Robben tumbled in the box under a challenge from Laurent Koscienly.
Atletico, 1-0 victors in their first leg battle with Milan, comfortably dispatched the Serie A giants in the rematch thanks to a Diego Costa brace and strikes from Raul Garcia and Arda Turan, while Brazilian veteran Kaka netted for the visitors at the Vicente Calderon.
