The Rivers State House
of Assembly has promised to give the state Waste Management Agency the necessary legislative backing for the full implementation of its functions.
The Chairperson of the House Committee on Environment, Hon Victoria Nyeche made the promise when the committee visited the agency’s premises and the dump sites at Rumuolumeni and Eliozu as part of its oversight functions.
According to her, the Assembly would always give the necessary support needed to deliver a better service to the people in terms of better environment.
“It is not all about cleanliness, but the health of the people of Rivers State. We are concerned about the health of our people and the environment”, she said.
She explained that the agency which replaces  the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Agency in view of the bill recently passed by the House,  would improve on efficient service delivery in the State.
The House Committee Chairperson expressed satisfaction with the work the agency had done to keep the state clean, noting that the House had passed the law for the executive and the agency to implement and meet the aspirations of the people.
She disclosed that the bill which was passed into law contained the legislative framework and that the implementing agency would need to woo investors that would partner with them for better services.
The lawmaker called on those who want to make a living from waste management to partner with  the agency, noting that there was a market for it
Earlier, the Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Environmental Authority, Mr Ade Adeogun said he met an organisation that lacked focus, but promised that the current management would improve on delivery of better services to the people.
He noted that despite the challenges of funds, the agency was able to improve on the structure and the premises as well as purchase of operational vehicles for the agency.
According to him, “our challenges centre on no maintenance workshops in Rivers State to maintain our equipment.
‘’ If our trucks are bad, we need to fly in engineers from Lagos, so we are working on how to train some of our personnel. This is why we are involved in training and re-training of workers. The attitude of workers has changed and they are ready to work because of the motivation.”
