RSG Urges Community To Check Oil Theft In Akpajo

ronment, Rivers State, Dr. Nyema Weli has advised the people of Akpajo community in Eleme Local Government Area of the State to help check the menace of pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft and activities of illegal refining of crude oil in the area.
Weli, represented by the Director, Inspectorate and Enforcement Department of the Ministry, Mr. George Obieceton made the advise  at the  ongoing Grassroots Environmental Campaign (GEC) by the ministry in conjunction with Shell Petroleum  Development Company  (SPDC) in the area recently.
According to him, all hands must  be on deck to discourage  illegal  bunkering activities, consisdering the negative impact it had on the environment, the people and the  nation’s  economy, stressing that, “it is time  we desist from these harmful and illicit activities that affect the main  stay of the economy”.
He reiterated  the need to reconsider the dangers it poses  to our present and future generations and to retrace our steps for safety, as any one caught tempering with oil installations would be prosecuted accordingly, and advised the youths to  avail themselves  of opportunities by the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency(RSSDA) to improve their lives.
In his  goodwill message, the Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Mr. Oji Ngofa said the campaign was timely and  thanked  the delegation for  chosing  Eleme as one of the areas for  the sensititsation  programme, assuring  them that the council  would do everything  possible to ensure its success.
Ngofa, who was  represented by the Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Mr. Fyneman Olungwe appealed for more synergy between the ministry, oil companies, non-governmental agencies and the council to strengthen  the fight  against illegal activities.
Earlier, the guest speaker at the  ceremony, Dr. Prince Mmon of the University of Port Harcourt enjoined the  youths to shun all illegal activities  in order to save the environment, the  people and the economy from degradation.
