Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Fidelis Mbam, Elechi noted that the state government was poised to attain environmental sustainability in the state.
“Government has provided 513 equipment for waste management, selected municipal waste management dump sites and environmental assessment sites.
“We have also established ecological baseline for the state as well as established a recycling plant for the conversion of refuse to organic manure.”
He said that his administration would partner with the National Orientation Agency to sustain health education both in the rural and urban areas.
“We shall also within a fortnight, work out modalities for daily inspection of all premises in the state by sanitary inspectors, to enforce environmental laws and sustain clean environment.
“I hereby direct the State Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that all industries, banks, churches, supermarkets, shops, local governments and development centres acquired the waste bins without delay.”
He later unveiled the Word Waste Bin and presented it for public use.
Also speaking, the Director-General, National Orientation Agency, Mr Mike Omeri, explained that the “Do The Right Thing” initiative was intended to help the country attain environmental sustainability.
“This will be done by tackling the poor attitude of Nigerians to their environment, which has caused environmental degradation.’’
“This is also a community-based environmental orientation and care initiative aimed at achieving environmental care through community mobilisation.”
According to Omeri, the orientation campaign will remedy the myriad of challenges affecting our environment caused by poor attitude of Nigerians towards environmental sanitation.
Position papers on the issue were also presented by The state Coordinator, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Mrs Mfon Nkanang, who explained that a clean environment would help reduce disasters and accidents in the country.
