Ebonyi State Environ
mental Protection Agency (EBSEPA) has abolished the use of bucket latrines in the state, the General Manager of the agency, Dr Okeh Okeh, has said.
Okeh said in an interview with newsmen in Abakaliki that landlords and other property owners must instal standard water system toilets and clean them daily in their buildings.
“This is part of the government’s campaign to attain sustainable environment and waste management in the state,” he said.
Okeh advised the people to bag domestic waste and put them in standard refuse bins in order not to deface the environment.
He pointed out that bad waste management practices could result in land, water and air pollution, which could lead to respiratory problems.
“A city with poor sanitation, smelly and with waste materials all over, does not attract good people, investors and tourists.
“EBSEPA has fully sensitised the inhabitants of the state to the need for waste management.
“This is done through house to house sanitary inspection and waste collection by the Pollution Control and Waste Management Department,” Okeh said.
He warned against the dumping of refuse into gutters.
