A renowned
farmer, Alhaji Sule Ahmadu has called on farmers across the country to give priority to the cultivation of yam in order to boost their economic base.
Ahmadu, who was speaking at an NTA programme, AM Express, said the yam was the king of tubers and should be accorded the recognition it deserves.
According to him, yam was held in high esteem in Nigeria and advocated for an all year round availability of the crop.
He said since Nigeria was diverse in food crops, the agric sector was equally growing in leaps and bounds.
He expressed the threat to the production of the major crop to include farmers’ ignorance in productive skills as well as loss in soil productivity in some parts of the country.
The farmer who boasted of making yam available in his barn all year round said the tuber crop had contributed immensely to the economic growth of Nigeria in recent years even as he called for concerted efforts in maintaining the tempo.
He said once in a while, farmers come together to brainstorm on the way forward for the optimal cultivation of yam across the country.
He said such forum had created awareness for most farmers who were hitherto not aware of some modern techniques.
