The Consumer Protection
Council (CPC), will soon meet with the Chief Executives of telecommunications companies in the country for enhanced service delivery to subscribers in the sector.
The Director-General of the council, Mrs Dupe Atoki, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday said the meeting was part of the activities lined up by the council to mark this year’s World Consumer Rights Day.
She said that the day, which is an annual event, will be the 21st in the series and has the theme “Fix our phone right”.
The CPC director-general said the day, which will hold on March 15, is to promote the basic rights of all consumers and demand that those rights are respected and protected.
Atoki said the day was also aimed at protesting against all the market abuses and social injustices which undermine the consumer rights.
“The meeting is geared towards eliciting questions from the operators on their challenges in the course of delivering services to customers, and the way forward,’’ she said.
The director-general said also that the day’s theme was selected to address the problems encountered by subscribers as a result of their subscription to any of the network providers.
“The international body, which is called Consumers International and with over 220 members drawn from over 150 countries, came up with the theme to mark this year’s World Consumer Rights Day.
“The CPC, being a member of the organisation, is tailoring its campaign along with the global team to commemorate the day.
“What we normally do, as part of our campaign, is to arrange some activities to sensitise consumers, which is a way of helping them to be able to exercise their rights in each sector of the economy.
“The campaign, which is normally held every March 15, involved road shows within Abuja and our zonal offices, as well as a consumers’ roundtable, among others,’’ Atoki said.
Our correspondent reports that the Day was first commemorated in 1983.
The declaration of the day initiated a worldwide movement to protect consumers’ rights, which included the right to redress, right to be served right, education, healthy environment, among others.
