Confab: Bishop Harps On National Interest

A cleric, Rt. Rev.
Godfrey Agupusi, has urged delegates to the ongoing national conference to discuss important issues that will move the country forward.
Agupusi, the Bishop of Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Abakaliki, gave the advice at the 20th Synod of the diocese in Abakaliki.
Agupusi urged the delegates not to engage themselves in issues that would promote their personal superiority over national interest.
According to him, no group in Nigeria is superior to the other by whatever consideration and that the national conference should not fail to produce a new Nigeria.
“The delegates should identify the causes of insurgency in Nigeria and the way forward to tackle them. The national conference should not conclude without producing a new constitution for the country,’’ he said.
Agupusi also condemned the trend whereby some lawmakers used the National Assembly as a platform for political thuggery.
“I call on the National Assembly to once again realise that their primary responsibility is to make laws that will positively impact on the poor people in the villages that sacrificed to vote for them.
“It should be understood that the chambers are not for political thuggery but for decency and decorum of the highest order even against ones will,” he said.
Agupusi urged the lawmakers to desist from making statements capable of heating up the polity.
“Our political class is creating situations where anybody can rise and abuse the president and governors at will and with impunity.
“They should not lament and bemoan when younger ones in turn begin to deride, disdain and relate to them disrespectfully”.
The bishop urged politicians to seek God at all times, adding that they should shun corrupt practices so as to move the  country forward.
The synod was attended by the senator representing Ebonyi north senatorial zone, Sen. Chris Nwankwo, Mr Peter Ogali, who represents Ohaukwu/Ebonyi federal constituency, Mr Obinna Ogba and other distinguished citizens.
