College Begs FG For Dam
The Acting Provost, Fed
eral College of Agriculture, Ebonyi State, Dr Felix Anuegbunwa, has appealed to the Federal Government to construct a dam in the state to boost agricultural production.
Anuegbunwa made the appeal in Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area in an interview with newsmen recently.
He said the dam would mitigate the water challenges militating against full scale agricultural production in the state and the institution which caused untold hardship to the students and staff.
“The underneath water we have here is covered by rock as the area is on a rocky terrain; it is therefore difficult for one to construct a bore hole.
“Efforts to actualise this by the school and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) several times failed,” he said.
He said it was regrettable that the dam proposed for the state by the Federal Government was shifted to another area.
“The site mapped out for the project was cleared, while the facilities for the construction were brought to site but the project went to another area.
“It is disturbing that this institution with a high number of students and staff populations depends on water from neighbouring states.
“We are therefore soliciting the assistance of the federal and state governments and organisations to construct hostels and classrooms blocks among others.
“This is the only College of Agriculture in the South-East and South-South zones of the country,” he said.
According to the acting provost, the institution through the assistance of some notable sons and daughters of the area benefited from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) programme for higher institutions.
“We have received a total of 220 laptops among other communication equipment as these would enable us to impart the desired Information Communication Technology (ICT) knowledge to the students.
“We have also introduced new courses such as Business Administration and Management, Public Administration and Accounting into our curriculum to enhance the business and administration knowledge of students,” he said.
