Abia CP Warns Against Extra-Judicial Killings
The Police Commis
sioner of Abia State, Mr Adamu Ibrahim, last Tuesday warned men and officers of the Aba Area Command to work hard to prevent extra-judicial killings in the area.
The commissioner, who gave the warning when he visited the command in Aba, said the force could no longer tolerate extra-judicial killings, saying the police had to watch the use of their firearms.
“We have guidelines on the use of firearms. Policemen are not meant to be trigger-happy.
“The era of extra-judicial killings is over; officers and men of the command should learn how to use firearms properly and where they do not know, they should be trained.
“You should collaborate more with the public and the community because working closer with the community makes the job of fishing out criminals and reducing crime to the barest minimum easier.
“You should work hard at being civil to the people because the era of incivility to the people is over,” he said.
The commissioner also urged the command to operate within the ambits of human rights law, adding that the police had no reason to harass the citizens.
Ibrahim warned his men to avoid incessant clashes with sister security agencies, adding that such action would tarnish the image of the police.
“I do not want to hear of clashes with sister security agencies because securing the zone cannot be done by the police alone. Security is everybody’s business,” he said.
He lauded the effort of the command in responding promptly to distress calls to nip crimes in the bud, stressing that he was aware of the good work of the men and officers of the command in protecting lives and property.
Earlier, the Area Commander, Mr Tunde Mobayo, said the commissioner’s tour of the zone showed his desire to understand its challenges.
He listed some of the challenges facing the zone as lack of serviceable vehicles, communication gadgets, inadequate arms, ammunition, manpower, standard police stations and dilapidated barracks.
Mobayo called on the commissioner to assist the command to boost the morale of its men and officers for better results.
