TUC Urges Nigerians To Pursue Social Justice
As Nigerians joined the
rest of the world yesterday to mark this year’s World Day of Social Justice, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State chapter has urged the people to reflect on the social ills plaguing the society.
Speaking to The Tide at the union’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, the union state chairman, Comrade Chika Onuegbu said February 20th every year was usually observed annually as a day of social justice to encourage people to look at how social justice affects their lives.
He said there was need to evaluate how social justice affects poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.
Onuegbu said in commemoration of this year’s celebration the union has tasked Nigerians to see how best to collectively  fight corruption, oil theft and violence which have worsened poverty, deprivation and social disintegration of the people.
The union leader urged Nigerians to treat corruption and oil theft as abomination that should be punishable with at least life imprisonment for the culprits culpable in the act.
He also advocated for the state confiscation of the assets acquired through stolen funds by those found culpable.
He said Nigerians should stand up and demand for social Justice and their rights without being intimidated by those in authority.
