Stakeholders in Rivers
State have called on the Rivers State Ministry of Environment to rescind its decision on the proscription of the RivGreen Marshalls introduced by the former commissioner in the ministry, Mr Kingsley Chindah.
A cross section of stakeholders, who spoke to The Tide said that the disappearance of RivGreen Marshalls had created room for lawlessness on the part of residents of Port Harcourt as refuse are dumped indiscriminately in the city.
They also lamented the incessant defacing of the city with faeces and urine, stressing that this situation had underscored the need for the ministry to order for the return of RivGreen Marshalls to the street of Port Harcourt.
In his view, Prince William Chinwo, lamented  the incessant destruction of flowers and plants constructed by the government to beautify the city, stressing that this was never the situation when RivGreen Marshalls were patrolling the streets of Port Harcourt.
Prince Chinwo, who commended the state government for the massive efforts in ensuring that Port Harcourt returns to its garden city status, however, stressed the need for the enforcement of discipline among residents of the state on the issue of environmental sanitation.
Also speaking, Chief Sunnie Chukumele said that Port Harcourt was cleaner now than before, and attributed it to the massive investment by the administration on environmental sanitation.
Chief Chukumele, who decried the gradual return of indiscipline on the part of residents of the city, also called for the return of the RivGreen Marshalls.
Although, efforts to reach the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli to comment on the issue had proved abortive, the commissioner had at different fora said that government was working out modalities to ensure sustainability on environmental cleanliness in the city, pointing out that the ministry would not condone any act of lawlessness on the part of any group as far as sanitation is concerned.
