Governor  Peter Obi of
Anambra State has commended teachers for their role in nurturing and moulding children to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
The governor made the commendation while inaugurating a teachers complex and a water project built by the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Awka.
He said that his administration would continue to support teachers in a bid to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) in the education sector.
He said that the secretariat which he supported with one million naira in 2012 would enhance better coordination of the activities of teachers for effective teaching and learning.
Obi also presented an 18-seater bus to the union to ease transportation of its executive members.
In a remark, the Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Suleiman Dikko, lauded Obi for his developmental strides in the education sector.
Dikko said that the governor did not manipulate contract awards as he gave funds directly to schools to execute projects, and urged other governors to emulate Obi’s exemplary role.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Uju Okeke, said the state government had sustained conscious efforts towards maintaining conducive academic environment for children.
Okeke noted that this had led to high performance by pupils and students in internal and external examinations.
In his address, the state NUT Chairman, Mr Ifeanyi Ofodile, commended Obi for inaugurating the project, saying that the governor’s performance in education was highly laudable.
