Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is expected in Rivers State today.
Obasanjo last visited the state during the tenure of Dr. Peter Odili in 2007 during which he commissioned the State Independent Power Project at Trans-Amadi and Omoku, among others.
The former president will be in the state for two days and will unveil projects so far executed and completed by the Rt Hon. Chibuike Amaechi-led administration.
On arrival, the president will unveil the Ambassador Nne Kurubo Model Secondary School at Eleme, Model Primary Schools, the newly reconstructed Stadium Road now Ken Saro-Wiwa Road, the Chief G. U. Ake Road and the Obiri Ikwerre Interchange Flyover, among others.
The elder statesman will be hosted to a state banquet later in the day. He will continue second round of projects commissioning on the 18th of February, as he is expected to unveil those in the town axis covering the indoor games hall, field 1 and 2 playgrounds. He will thereafter depart after the exercise.
Governor Amaechi had on Monday last week announced the visit of the ex-president to the state, saying plans were in top gear to receive him to the state.
The exercise forms part of the plans by the state government to commission its projects executed and completed under the Amaechi led administration.
Earlier this year, the governor hinted that out of the 500 model primary schools, about 300 have been completed and will soon be fitted with ICT facilities.
He also said that over 100 of the model health centres have been completed across the state, while six of the new model secondary schools will be commissioned before the year runs out.
Meanwhile, Obasanjo yesterday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, enjoined Christians to participate actively in politics.
The former president warned Christians against being indifferent towards politics, saying this could result in the country falling into the hands of evil men, who he said, could not offer Nigeria any good.
Obasanjo said this during the fifth anniversary thanksgiving service of the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King, a religious arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
While thanking God for the existence of the chapel of which he is the chief promoter, he said Christians should stop shying away from partisan politics for the good of the entire country.
Obasanjo said, “I want to say here that Christians should participate in politics. We should not leave politics in the hands of the evil ones who cannot offer this country any good.”
Earlier in his sermon delivered on the occasion, the former president of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Reverend Ola Akande, described the former president as a rare and special gift to Nigeria. Akande noted that the likes of Obasanjo usually came once in a generation.
