LG Plans 508-Shop Modern Market
The Chairman of Epe Lo
cal Government in Lagos State, Mr Olusegun Agbeje, recently said the council would construct a modern market with 504 shops.
Agbeje said that the construction of the shops, scheduled to commence in May, was part of efforts to leverage the council’s revenue to meet the needs of the people.
The chairman disclosed this in Epe during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Lagos Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
He said that the ultra modern markets with 504 lock up shops, 402 key clamps and 138 parking spaces would replace the old Ayetoro market in the area.
“The project ought to have started, but we had some challenges with the contractors and the old market traders on relocation, but all the issues have been sorted out.
“We are going to commence the construction of the new market in May.
“The project is a private -public partnership initiative. It will encourage our people to have modern market facilities,” he said.
The council boss said that the construction of the market ought to have commenced in January 2013, but was stopped due to some challenges that had been resolved.
Agbaje also said the project would be in partnership with some commercial banks to turn Aiyetoro market into a modern day-market that could compete with other ultra modern markets in Lagos.
He said that the project would be completed in 18 months and would be re-allotted to the old traders “who have been occupying them since 1940.”
The council boss said that the local government had not determined the amount the allottees would pay for the shops.
Agbaje said the council would inaugurate its e-library in June to assist teachers and students in public schools in Epe.
He said that the e-library would assist residents to enhance their computer literacy and improve their access to education materials globally.
“All teachers in public schools will access the e-library free, while a token will be charged from others interested in the facility.
“Such development will improve commercial development of the community because as we speak today, we don’t have any cyber café in the community.
“This makes it extremely difficult for our youths to develop in ICT,” he said.
The chapel Chairman, Mr Tayo Ikujuni, said that the essence of the visit was to establish a relationship between the union and the council.
“The visit is to build a partnership towards the development of the local government and the union,” Ikujuni said.
