Fight Corruption, Amaechi Tells Clergymen

Governor Chibuike Amaechi has urged the clergy to use the pulpit to fight the malaise of corruption.
He gave the charge during the induction of a new resident minister and assistant ministers by the Prelate of the Presbyterian Church in Nigeria, His Eminence, Rev. Emele Mba Uka yesterday at Christ Church Interdenominational, Port Harcourt.
Amaechi advocated what he called ‘liberation theology’, which according to him, preaches against injustice and oppression, lamenting that the country was drifting to a state of complete rot following the recent revelation of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Malam Lamido Sanusi of missing funds in the nation coffers.
The Rivers State governor argued that if the unremitted $20billion was converted, it would amount to about N8trillion, which would have helped tackle the country’s development plan for up to four or five years.
He called on the clergy to rise to the challenge of seeking accountability from government, saying , “I think preachers should start to preach the theology that will liberate us, until we ask ourselves the question of what qualifies this man to steal our money…So, the church must ask that question.”
Amaechi also used the church service to announce plans by the state government to expand the road and construct a new model primary school in the church premises.
He assured that the new school would be run by the church.
Earlier in his sermon, Prof Emele Mba Uka charged the newly appointed ministers to exhibit the hallmark of service and to be courageous as would be demanded in their position.
The Presbyterian prelate commended Governor Amaechi for his vision, urging him not to relent in the good works he was doing in the state.
On the state of the country, Prof Uka said that, “some of us are concerned about this country. We are not a people but a geographical expression. I hope the National Conference will come and address this matter”’.
