Expert Wants National Confab To Address Environmental Problems

An Environmentalist and
Executive Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundaton (HOMEF), Rev. Nnimmo Bassey, has urged the Federal Government to use the forthcoming national conference to address the environmental problems of the Niger Delta.
Rev Bassey who said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt also urged for legislations to end gas flaring in the Niger Delta.
He said that the greatest problems facing the region today bothers on environmental pollution, stressing that untill the situation is addressed, the people will continue to suffer from series of health challenges.
Rev. Bassey described the environmental situation in Ogoniland and Umuechem in the Etche local government area as very pathetic  stressing that something must be done about the situation.
He urged that Niger Delta people must use the forthcoming conference to expose to the world other high level of environmental degradation in the region.
Meanwhile, Rev. Nnimmo Bassey, has urged for legislations to check gas flaring in the region.
He also urged multinational companies operating in the region to give definite time in which to end gas flaring across the region, stressing that the continuous shift in dates by the oil companies is impacting negatively on the Niger Delta’s environment.
The environmentalist also urged the various states in the South south zone to initiate policies and programmes that will check illegal oil bunkering in their various states.
He called for the creation of employment for youths of the Niger Delta as a way of disuading them from illegal oil bunkering, while the various security agencies be properly equipped to check the activities of illegal oil bunkerers.
