Developer Urges Policy Change For Easy Home Ownership
A real estate developer,
Frank Nkpurukwe has called for a change of policy that will enable citizens to own homes.
Nkpurukwe who was reacting to the issue of housing deficit in the country, especially in Rivers State in an interview with The Tide at the weekend in Port Harcourt noted that the housing deficit is on the increase as the population keeps increasing, and people are in demand of accommodation.
He particularly called for measures which would enable Nigerian citizens, especially one who is just starting out on his own as an adult to own a house early in his working career.
“More efforts should be made to build houses that will be allocated to civil servants on a live-and-own basis, which can be paid for over a long period,” the estate developer said.
According to him, if government will show the political goodwill and implement a policy where between 500 and 1,000 housing units will be built annually. In 10 years, 10,000 units will be built and the burden will be reduced.
He said “If this policy is a yearly thing, everybody will be hopeful of owning a house in the public service before they retire.
On land acquisition, Nkpurukwe urged those who intend to buy land to always verify any land, especially in Port Harcourt environs, before they go into transaction, given the case of Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority land earmarked for development.
He said that anybody that takes possession of the land is the owner of the land, and urged land speculators to always contact an estate valuer on any land transaction, who will give advise.
