A’Ibom To Recruit More Health Workers
The Commissioner for
Health in Akwa Ibom State, Dr Ememabasi Bassey, has said that the state would recruit more health workers to ensure effective delivery of healthcare services in the state.
Bassey told newsmen in Uyo that the move was to address the shortfall in staff strength of health workers and its attendant hampering of service delivery.
He disclosed that the shortfall in health personnel was necessitated by the expansion of infrastructure in the sector.
“We are aware that there is a shortfall of manpower in the state hospitals and we will address the situation as soon as we are through with our budget defence.
“We are already working towards ensuring that more medical and other relevant personnel are recruited to make up for the shortfall arising from either death or retirement,” he said.
The commissioner said that the government had plans to upgrade three general hospitals to specialist hospitals in its resolve to continue to ensure quality healthcare delivery.
Bassey said that the general hospitals were the ones in Ikot Ekpene, Eket and Oron. He added that a diagnostic centre that would serve as a referral institution for the hospitals would soon be inaugurated at Ikot Ekpene.
The commissioner said that the Akwa Ibom 20th Anniversary Hospital in Uyo was nearing completion and would be inaugurated this year.
He said that some health management consultants, including First Care Group from the U.S. had shown interest in managing the hospital when inaugurated.
Bassey commended Gov. Godwswill Akpabio for his achievements in the health sector of the state and urged the people to support his administration.
