Tennis Athlete Promises To Excel At Commonwealth Games
A national table tennis
player, Ganiyu Ashimiyu, has expressed determination to make the country proud through a creditable performance at the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The games are scheduled to hold from July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ashimiyu told newsmen that he would sacrifice his social activities to enable him to create adequate time for training programmes, adding: “I believe that through a selfless commitment, I will succeed.
“Discipline must come to play for me to achieve my objective and that is to say that majority of schedule will be channelled into my preparations for the games.’’
He said that the competition for honours would be very stiff.
“I am sure that players from other countries are seriously preparing to sweep the medal table, so I don’t want to take chances because I must win some medals for the nation,’’ he said.
Ashimiyu said that the renovated Knock-Up Hall at the National Stadium would provide him an enabling environment to train, adding that the environment was now conducive for training.
He urged the technical officials of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) to also plan their programmes to fit into the requirements of aspiring, adding that “training should be more comprehensive”.
“The essence is to ensure that we are in form with what it takes to compete favourably with our opponents during the games.
“All hands must be on deck to make sure that our performances take us to the final matches in all the events; there has to be an improvement on our records this time,’’ he said.
