In a bid to bridge the
lingering housing deficit, a Quantity Surveyor, Mr Victor Shonubi, has called on government, individuals and organisations to encourage the formation of housing cooperatives.
Speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Monday, Shonubi said that time has come when people begin to group themselves to form cooperatives to fight the lingering housing deficit.
Shonubi, who is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), said that government could bridge the housing deficit by encouraging a pragmatic partnership between the public and private sectors.
He suggested that individuals and organizations should be encouraged to come together to form housing cooperatives, as part of efforts to boost housing delivery.
Shonubi, however, advised the government to make land available to estate developers across the country in order to accelerate the construction of affordable houses.
According to him, the current demand for housing is very high, and that the demand will continue to increase steadily, but that the supply is not adequate, due to known challenges.
He said, “something urgent must be done to bridge the housing deficit, and we must not wait for government alone to tackle the matter. There ought to be partnership and housing cooperative to champion the course.
The surveyor expressed hope that the formation of housing cooperatives and partnership will bring about the desired change.
