Retiree Urges Youths To Embrace Farming
A retired civil servant,
Mr Cletus Uba has called on youths to embrace farming to enable them earn a living.
Mr Uba who retired recently from the services of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Port Harcourt that when farming was taken as a vocation, it would help fight joblessness and financial distress.
He said if fully embraced, it would ensure that food was on their table and also boost the nation’s economy.
According to Mr Uba, in order to reduce the high incidence of food importation into the country the authorities should take farming seriously.
He pointed out that Nigeria was blessed with able-bodied youths who can drive the sector even as he said the continuous importation of food into the country was unacceptable.
“Importation of food is a slight and insult on our claim as the giant of Africa because we ought to be self-reliant in food production”, he said.
He opined that some of the violence among the youths could be attributed to hunger and unemployment even as he said the craze for white-collar jobs compounds the problem.
He further called for a revolution in the agriculture sector adding that it was capable of growing the nation’s economy.
While calling on farmers to support the government’s Transformation Agenda (TA), he appealed to the government to make loans available to farmers.
