The Adamawa State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) last Saturday confirmed the arrest of an ex-lawmaker in possession of 81.9 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp).
Confirming the arrest to newsmen in Yola, the state NDLEA Commander, Alhaji Hassan Zungeru, said the suspect was charged to court.
“The suspect, a former lawmaker is being prosecuted at the Federal High Court Yola,” Zungeru said.
Zungeru said the former Assemblyman, who was in the state assembly in 1992, was arrested with the exhibit in Jada town.
“Following intelligence report of suspicious illicit activities by the ex-lawmaker, the agency after several months of monitoring, finally arrested him,” Zungeru said.
The commander commended the courts in Yola for their demonstration of professionalism in the acceleration and prosecution of drug suspects.
He mentioned shortage of personnel and patrol vehicles as the major challenges facing the agency in Adamawa.
The NDLEA has nine area offices in Adamawa.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA last Saturday said that it arrested an undergraduate with two parcels of cannabis weighing 1.745kg.
In a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Mr Mitchel Ofoyeju, the NDLEA said that the suspect was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.
The statement was made available to newsmen in Lagos.
The NDLEA said that the 20-year-old suspect imported the banned drug with his school fees.
It said that the suspect also bought a cell phone for N107,000 with the school fees in the belief that he would pay his tuition with profit from the sale of the cannabis.
The agency said that the suspect was found in possession of the drug during the inward screening of passengers on an Africa World Airline flight from Accra.
“The drug was hidden inside a bag containing his personal effects. He was immediately arrested.
“The case is under investigation,” it added.
