NBF Hunts For Talents In States
The Nigeria Boxing
Federation (NBF) will comb the states to scout for talents in order to reposition the sport in the country, an official said on Monday.
The Assistant Secretary, NBF, Tunde Laguda, told newsmen in Lagos that the programme was one of its priorities for 2014.
Laguda said that the near comatose state of the sport in some states was unhealthy hence the plan to arrest the slide.
“Boxing is one of the six sports Nigeria will be participating in at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
“Most state associations are not part of the preparation and this is mostly because they do not have representatives in the list of boxers to be invited to camp for selection for the event.
“The few regular states of Lagos, Ogun and Delta have continued to dominate the national scene without contributions from others,” he noted.
The Commonwealth Games is scheduled to hold from July 23 to August 3.
According to him, there are many unidentified boxing talents in the states who can be of immense benefit to the nation if discovered.
Laguda appealed to the state associations to brace-up for the planned in-depth talent hunt which would be held in form of an inter-regional championship.
He said the planned championship would aid the development of the sport at the grassroots.
NBF will open camp for the Commonwealth hopefuls in February in Abuja.
