NAFDAC Sanctions 144 Firms
The National Agency for
Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) last Monday announced that 144 businesses were sanctioned for violating its regulations between January 2012 and December 2013 in Edo State.
The Head of NAFDAC Operations in the state, Mr David West who made this known in an interview in Benin said that 101 offenders were sanctioned in 2012, while 43 were sanctioned in 2013.
He attributed the drop in the number of offenders sanctioned in 2012 and 2013 to a higher level of compliance with the agency’s directives and the operations of agencies like the Consumer Protection Commission.
West said that among those sanctioned in 2013 were16 medicine dealers involved in the sale of unregistered sex-stimulating drugs, adding that an Indian was arrested in Benin in October, 2013 for selling unregistered products.
He said products recovered from the Indian included small bottles containing concoctions and some copper bangles, which he claimed, could cure hypertension and diabetes, adding that no fewer than 18 companies were registered 2013, with 12 of them involved in water packaging.
He said that during the period, the agency received five complaints from consumers and inspected 267 companies.
In another development the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) in Kano State last Monday advised cosmetics producers, whose certificates had expired to renew them or face the wrath of the agency.
NAFDAC’s Acting Head in Kano State, Mr Anikoh Ibrahim, said that the warning was necessary to ensure conformity with the laws of the land.
He said the agency would soon begin routine inspection of the factories to ensure compliance with “good manufacturing practice”. We are strategising to commence routine inspection of cosmetic factories and any producer who fails to renew his or her certificate will face sanction,’’ he added.
According to him, the agency has planned to carry out similar inspection of sachet water factories in April, with a view to ensuring that producers met the set standard.
Ibrahim also urged unregistered sachet water producers in the state to register in their own interest or risk being blacklisted.
