The Imo State govern
ment has donated more than three hectares of land to the car dealers association in the state for the establishment of an automobile market.
The Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Planning, Mr Uche Nwosu, announced the donation last Tuesday when he inspected the site located in Naze, Owerri North Local Government Area.
“The relocation is to further decongest the state capital and boost the revenue generation profile of the state and the new site for the car dealers will improve economic activities in the Naze area of the state capital.
“It is a good thing for the state. Local food shops will be erected and even banks will find it useful opening their branches there. The auto mart will increase the standard of living of the people in the community”, Nwosu said.
He commended the car dealers for yielding to the government’s directive to vacate their former place and promised to extend electricity, construct good roads, provide adequate security, build perimeter fencing and put in place other social amenities to make the environment more conducive.
The commissioner directed the Acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Basil Ogbunga, to ensure that the dealers got the relevant documents to the land for orderliness and maintenance of structures in the place.
Nwosu said the market would have a variety of cars in display, create a healthy competition among the dealers and make buying of cars easier for customers.
Earlier, Mr Rufus Osueke, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the association, thanked the state government for giving them a permanent site to sell their cars.
He appealed to the commissioner to ensure the allocation of stands to individual car owners and the issuance of certificates of occupancy.
Osueke identified lack of security, electricity and other social amenities as some of the challenges they encountered in the place and enjoined the government to come to their aid.
The car dealers were formerly at the popular Somachi area of the state capital on Egbu Road.
