The Former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir G.T.G. Toby has cautioned politicians against acts capable of throwing the society into chaos.
Toby, who gave the charge in an interview with newsmen during a meeting of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, GRA District 9140, also stressed the need for political offices to be made less attractive to avoid the on-going wranglings in the country.
He said that it was high time politicians saw their various offices as platforms for selfless service to the society, and deplored the situation where some people go to the extent of killing others to occupy political offices.
The former deputy governor, who was the guest lecturer at the meeting urged Nigerians to emulate the life of Paul Harris, the founder of the Rotary Club, whose activities had brought succour to millions of people across the world.
He said that the sooner Nigerians emulated Paul Harris, the better would be the society. He charged Rotarians to ensure that the ideals of the founders of the club were reflected wherever they find themselves.
Toby, who delved into the history of the club, said that the year 1905 would continue to remain significant in the history of the world as it marked the beginning of volunteerism.
According to him, “Paul Harris lived a life that rendered service to humanity. Rotary has gone a long way. It has touched lives”.
In her message, President, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA, Ms Mediline Tador said that the Club remained committed to the ideals of its Founders, which are to give service to the society.
Tador also charged club members to see integrity and sincerity as their watch word.
