Effluent Discharge: PH Residents Raise Alarm
Some residents in D/Line area of Port Harcourt have raised alarm over the discharge of smelly water into the streets by a hotel.
The hotel located at No. 10/12 Abeokuta Street known as T-End Hotels allegedly pump water out from septic tank every morning from about 4am.
According to some of the residents who spoke to our correspondent, the water flows from Abeokuta Street to Choba Street and into Agudama Street and beyond.
For Jude Eberechi who sells shoes along Agudama Street, “the smelly water greets him every morning” and expressed worry of a possible outbreak of epidemic disease in the area.
Investigation by our correspondent shows that the streets that the water flows through have no drainage system.
However, the proprietor of T-End Hotels, Mrs Coker Inuyougha reaction denied the allegation.
Mrs Inuyougha, who took our correspondent round her premises claimed that she pumps the water into a GP tank and takes it to the Ntawogba creek for discharge.
She further explained that her business makes her use a lot of water and most of the water that go to the streets was from the washing of cars.
While blaming the appropriate authorities for not providing drainage in the area, she said all the people living around discharge their domestic waste water into the streets.
Mrs Inuyougha who said she was a widow explained that it was unfair for the residents to single her out as the only person responsible for all the water found on the streets.
