Cultism: Court Remands Three In Ilorin Prison

trates’ Court last Monday remanded three suspected cultists—Idowu Mumeen, 18, Oyinloye Toheeb, 29, and Salawu Mayowa, 24,—for being in possession of firearms and being members of a secret cult.
The police prosecutor, Cpl. Sanni Abdullahi, said the accused were arrested at an initiation ceremony of new members of a secret cult on Jan. 4 at Eiyekorin area, Ilorin.
He said that when a search was conducted on the accused, a locally made pistol with four live cartridges and a contact list of Eiye cult members were recovered from Mumeen.
The prosecutor said the accused were arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms and being a member of secret cult.
The offences, the prosecutor said, was contrary to sections 97 of the Penal Code Law, 28(1) of the Firearms Law and 11(1) of Secret Cult Law, 2004.
Abdullahi told the court that investigation into the matter was still ongoing.
The prosecutor objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them in prison pending the outcome of investigation.
The magistrate, Mariam Magaji, declined to take the plea of the accused for lack of jurisdiction to try the matter.
She ordered the accused to be remanded at the Federal Prison, Ilorin, and adjourned the case to January 27 for further mention.
