Court Arraigns Landlord Over Alleged N235,000 Fraud

A 42-year-old land
lord, Godwin Oviewhisky, who allegedly defrauded an accommodation seeker of N235,000, last Thursday appeared before an Abule-Egba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused, who lives at 21, Ayodeji Adeife Street, Egbeda, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of obtaining by false pretences, stealing and assault.
The Prosecutor, Insp Rachael Williams, told the court that the accused committed the offences at his residence in June, 2012.
According to the prosecution, the landlord collected the money from Mr Adekoya Kunle on the pretext that he would let out a mini-flat to him.
“After the accused collected the money, he stopped picking the complainant’s calls, and did not open the gate for him whenever he came to his house.
“The complainant eventually gained entrance into his house and was beaten by his thugs,” she said.
The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene Sections 171, 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with a surety in like sum.
Elias adjourned the case till January 29 for mention.
