The Chairman, Lagos
State Chess Association, Fela Bank-Olemoh has urged successful ex-national players to assist budding talents to achieve their dreams of becoming professionals in the sport.
Bank-Olemoh told newsmen in Lagos that the ex-players should be able to give back to the society that had made them through assisting the budding ones.
“I am using this medium to call on players who have benefited from chess to make a positive impact on the sport that has made them by sponsoring our programmes.
“The development of chess should not be left to the government alone, but rather be a collective responsibility of past players in collaboration with the national body,’’ he said.
Also speaking, a former secretary of the federation, Bode Durotoye, noted that the National Sports Commission (NSC) could not run the development of chess alone and appealed for assistance from ex-players.
Durotoye, a former player and now the Coordinator, NSC North Central Zone 11, added that ex players who were passionate about the development of the sport should help to promote it.
“Chess veterans who played in the 1980’s and 1990’s and are intellectually-minded with the interest of the sport at heart should complement the federation’s efforts,’’ he said.
The coordinator also called for collaboration between interested individuals and the Chess Players Association (CPAN) to combine resources for the growth of the game.
He said the resources could be used for the sponsorship of regular national competitions, participation in international competitions and organising seminars and workshop for officials.
