The U. J. Esuene Stadium
has been shut down for repairs by the Cross River State government as preparations for the National Sports Festival reach top gear.
This disclosure was made by the State’s Commissioner of Sports, Patrick Ugbe, who informed that the entire sports complex has been shut to the public for the time being to facilitate the rehabilitation and repairs of the stadium which has become home to the Super Eagles in recent years. Ugbe stated that the Liyel Imoke administration is keen to upgrade the current facilities at the stadium before the commencement of the National Sports Festival later in the year.
He further informed that, an ultra-modern Indoor Sports Hall is being constructed with in the premises of the stadium, as well as separate halls for Basketball, Handball and Abula halls.
Renovation works are also being planned for the sporting facilities at the University of Calabar, which were constructed when the institution hosted the Nigeria University Games (NUGA), but are now in appalling state as a result of over utilization.
