Governor Chibuike Amaechi has hinted of plans by the All Progressives Congress(APC) to commence registration of party members by the first week of next month.
He gave the hint during the Save Rivers Movement(SRM) rally at Khana Local Government Area in Bori at the weekend.
”By February 5th we shall start registration, let everybody go home and register’’ he enjoined the people.
Amaechi described the people’s voter’s card as a weapon to check corrupt politicians and enemies of the state, as he urged the citizenry to vote wisely in the upcoming elections next year.
He charged the Ogonis and the people of the state to stand up to whoever might want to harass or intimidate them for political gains.
He said that by resisting oppression, the people would be forcing their oppressors to initiate peace.
The governor said: “I do not want to come back to Ogoni to hear that you were shattered. I do not want you to take the law into your own hands but I want you to make sure that nobody shoots at you.
“They (gun-wielding militants) are all human beings. They are not ghosts. They are neither angels nor devil. They are human beings like you. If a man slaps you and gets away with it, tomorrow, he will come back” he further stated.
The governor carpeted the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP saying: “PDP claims to be the biggest party in Nigeria. APC is the fastest -growing party in Nigeria. Then, there was no ACN, no CPC, only PDP in Rivers State. Now, they have seen another party, why are they afraid?
“Why are they fighting? Why are they shooting? Why are they using policemen? They should allow voting to take place.”
Amaechi thanked the Ogoni’s for the large turn-out despite the threat of bloodshed and a possible repeat of the Sunday, January 19 gun attack. The governor said that his decision to be at the rally was to show that as a governor, he could visit any part of Rivers State. “I could not have sat at home while my supporters were at risk. I’m not that kind of governor. It was better the gunmen attacked me with my supporters,” Amaechi had added.
Earlier in his remarks,Interim Chairman of APC in the state, Chief Ibiamu Ikanya urged Ogoni people to embrace the vision and goals of the SRM.
He thanked them for their support to APC and all activities of the Save Rivers Movement, while describing the governor as courageous and visionary leader.
