Africa Junior Tennis Championship (AJTC) qualifiers will be rewarded with N100, 000, Aminu Kurfi, Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), has said.
Kurfi, who made the pledge at the ongoing AJTC qualifiers at the National Stadium in Abuja, said the reward was to encourage the players representing the country for their efforts.
He said that silver medalist would get N50,000 each.
“I know we have trained well and if we succeed in qualifying, personally, I will support whoever that wins a gold medal in any of the categories for Nigeria.
“I promise any gold medalist N100, 000, while any silver medalist will get N50, 000
“If we are so lucky, we get all the tickets, am ready to give them this amount from my pocket,’’ he said.
The LOC chairman said the championship would be used as an avenue to unite the players and create room for them to interact.
He said the players would be taken on excursion to Nigeria tourist centres to showcase the beauty of the country and its cultural heritage.
“We want tennis to be a symbol of unity, and in fact, a unifying factor for Africans.
“We want to use the opportunity to unite the youths from their young age through interaction and communication, to begin to see not their country only, but Africa as their focus.
“The participants will be taken to amusement park, Zuma rock, wonderland and all the tourist centres in Abuja for them to see the beauty of Nigeria,” he said.
Kurfi said the winners of the U-14 and U-16 categories would represent their countries at the continental championship in March in Kenya.
He commended the board members for their support and sacrifices to ensure that everything was in place for a successful competition.
Nine countries, including Nigeria are participating in the third edition of the West and Central AJTC qualifiers, scheduled to hold between January 12 to  20.
